Troubleshooting

Pressing the shortcut does nothing
  1. Check that the magnifier icon is in your menu bar. If not, open BrowserSearch again.
  2. Open Settings…. A red note under the shortcut means another app owns it. Record a different one.
  3. Try choosing Search Tabs from the menu bar icon. If the panel opens, the problem is the shortcut, not the app.
Settings shows a warning under my shortcut

BrowserSearch checks your shortcut against macOS, other apps and common launchers. Red means the shortcut won't reach BrowserSearch (macOS or another running app owns it): record a different one. Orange means it works but clashes with something, for example ⌘F would replace Find in every app, and ChatGPT, Raycast and Alfred use ⌥Space by default. Shortcuts with ⌃⌥ are rarely taken.

⌘F in the panel closes it instead of searching page text

Your search shortcut is ⌘F, and a global shortcut always wins over the panel's own keys. Pick a different shortcut in Settings › General (⌃⌥Space is rarely taken); Settings shows a warning for any shortcut that collides with a panel key.

Page search says it needs “Allow JavaScript from Apple Events”

Browsers block other apps from reading page text unless you allow it. Chrome: View › Developer › Allow JavaScript from Apple Events. Safari: Settings › Advanced › Show features for web developers, then Develop › Developer Settings… › Allow JavaScript from Apple Events. Titles and addresses are searched without it.

The Stale view is empty

Tabs only count as stale after going unlooked-at for the number of days in Settings › Organize (7 by default), counted from when BrowserSearch started noticing. Give it a week, or lower the number.

A moved Chrome tab lost its back history

Chrome can't move a tab between windows from outside, so ⌘M and ⌘O reopen the page and close the original. Safari moves tabs as they are.

How do I group tabs?

Select a tab (or mark several with ⇧↓) and press ⌘T, type #work and press ↩. Then type #work in the panel, or press ⇥ to the # Tags view. ⌘↩ on a group opens all of it, reopening pages you've closed.

Why doesn't the App Store version support Firefox?

Firefox can only be read through Accessibility, which apps from the Mac App Store aren't allowed to use. The direct-download edition supports Firefox.

The menu bar icon is gone

It was probably turned off in Settings. Open BrowserSearch again from Finder or Spotlight: Settings appears, and you can turn Show in menu bar back on.

Chrome or Safari tabs don't show up
  1. The browser must already be open; BrowserSearch never launches it.
  2. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Automation, find BrowserSearch and turn on the browser.
  3. If you clicked Don't Allow earlier and BrowserSearch isn't listed, run tccutil reset AppleEvents com.giridharmb.BrowserSearch in Terminal and search again to get the prompt back.
Firefox tabs don't show up

Grant Accessibility: Settings… › Grant Accessibility…, then turn on BrowserSearch in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility. The panel shows a reminder at the bottom while Firefox is open without access.

The Recent list is empty or not updating
  1. Check Remember recently used tabs is on in Settings › General.
  2. Recent only notices tabs in browsers BrowserSearch is allowed to read. Look at Settings › Browsers: each should say Allowed (or Accessibility granted for Firefox).
  3. Tabs are noted while the browser is the app in front, so switch to a tab and stay a couple of seconds.
⌘W says the tab can't be closed

Closing from the panel works for Chrome and Safari. Firefox doesn't let other apps close its tabs; switch to it with ↩ and press ⌘W there.

Why don't Firefox results show a URL?

Firefox doesn't let other apps read its tabs through scripting, so BrowserSearch reads the tab bar instead, which only has titles.

Will you support Brave, Edge or Arc?

They're on the list. Ask for yours so we know which matters most.
